Linux installation and configuration is a multi-step process allowing customization based on requirements at almost every stage. In this course, you will learn about some of that customization and some basic patterns of how to do an initial install. You will learn about hard drive partitioning, boot managers, software repositories and the tools necessary to maintain, update, and install software on different Linux distributions. This course is one of a series in the Skillsoft learning path that covers the objectives for the CompTIA Linux+ exams LX0-103.

Learning Objectives

Design Hard Disk Layout

  • start the course
  • describe how to assign filesystems to separate partitions or disks
  • configure partitions based on the intended use of the system
  • specify the boot requirements that must be met for the /boot partition
  • describe the basic features of the Logical Volume Manager or LVM

Install a Boot Manager

  • configure the boot loader to use alternate boot locations
  • configure and install the GRUB (legacy) boot loader
  • configure the GRUB 2 boot loader
  • use GRUB tools to interact with the boot loader

Manage Shared Libraries

  • describe and identify shared library files
  • specify the typical locations of system libraries and use the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to set alternate locations
  • use Linux shared library tools to configure shared libraries and verify which are loaded

Use Debian Package Management

  • use aptitude to install, upgrade, and uninstall packages
  • use dpkg to install, upgrade, and uninstall packages
  • describe how to find packages containing specific file names or libraries
  • use tools to obtain information and installation details about a package

Use RPM and YUM Package Management

  • use RPM to install, re-install, upgrade, and remove packages
  • use YUM to install, re-install, upgrade, and remove packages
  • describe how to obtain information and installation details on RPM packages
  • use tools to obtain a list of files that a package contains and find packages a file came from

Practice: Managing the Linux Installation Process
