Course Description

Every Unix installation will have the command line available, and knowledge of command line syntax is required for ongoing management. The X Window system provides a GUI for Unix systems. Both management models are covered in this course.

Learning Objectives

Unix Command Line Basics

  • start the course
  • recognize standard Unix command line syntax
  • list commonly used Unix shells
  • view man pages and switch between shells
  • describe Unix configuration file standards
  • view Unix log files
  • edit files using the nano text editor
  • perform common Unix tasks at the command line

The Unix GUI

  • describe the X Window System and its benefits
  • configure the Unix X Window System

Practice: Unix Management Tools

  • use the Unix GUI and command line for management
