Course Description

Configuring Junos OS devices requires a thorough understanding of networking fundamentals, and this course is a primer in that understanding. It covers the fundamentals of networking, including the OSI network model, the routing and switching functions, and data-link and IP addressing. This course is one of a series of Skillsoft courses that cover the objectives for Juniper Networks exam JN0-102. This exam completes the requirement for the certification Juniper Networks Certified Associate - Junos (JNCIA-Junos).

Learning Objectives

Network Devices

  • start the course
  • describe the seven layers of the ISO Open Systems Interconnection model
  • describe the characteristics of layer 2 and layer 3 in the OSI model with respect to node-to-node and end-to-end communication
  • describe the concept of a collision domain in a layer 2 network
  • describe the concept of a broadcast domain in a layer 2 network
  • describe the function of layer 2 network switches
  • describe the function of layer 3 routers
  • describe the SONET and SDH protocols for transferring data over fiber optic cable
  • describe the OTN standard for optical networks
  • describe the basic characteristics of Ethernet
  • list the variants of Ethernet in common use

Addressing

  • list and describe the addressing schemes used at layer 2 of the OSI model
  • describe address resolution at layer 2 and ARP
  • describe the fundamental properties and structure of IPv4 addresses
  • describe the fundamental properties and structure of IPv6 addresses
  • describe the use of subnet mask and default gateway for IPv4 addresses

Subnetting and Supernetting

  • describe the binary number system and how to convert from decimal to binary and binary to decimal
  • describe the process of subnetting to split an IP address space
  • describe the technique of supernetting to aggregate an IP address space
  • describe the function of routing tables and the longest match routing algorithm

Layer 4

  • describe the function of protocols at layer 4 and the main protocols in use
  • describe the operation of connection-oriented protocols and TCP
  • describe the function of connectionless protocols and UDP

Practice: Protocols and Functions

  • match protocols and functionality in networks to the layers responsible
