Course Description

This course will lay the foundation on which to build a working knowledge of network engineering. This introductory class will provide a comprehensive overview of how modern networks operate. Topics will include OSI model, legacy technology overview, TCP/IP, LAN and WAN technologies, how the Internet works, switching and routing basics. Students will be given hands-on exercises to reinforce the knowledge taught in class.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify and describe the common physical and logical networking components.
2. Articulate and demonstrate mastery of the OSI model and how it relates to the IP protocol stack.
3. Illustrate basic knowledge of the fundamental concepts of TCP, UDP, and ICMP.
4. Define various networking protocols, and their operation in the transfer of data from a PC to an Internet
Web Server.
5. Define the basic structure of TCP/IP and demonstrate subnetting of the IP addresses.
6. Compare and contrast routing and switching functionality including an understanding of when each
should be used and why.
