Why Veterans Should Consider a Career in Cybersecurity
This month and every month, NICCS wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Nation’s Veterans for your service to our country. If you are a Veteran who is thinking about what’s next in your career, you should consider pursuing cybersecurity careers and studies, as your military service and the opportunities within the field are a great match for Veterans. Key Benefits to Launching a Cyber Career for Veterans
- Cybersecurity jobs are very much in demand, and they pay well. According to the most recent International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) Workforce Study, there is a shortage of 4.8 million cybersecurity workers worldwide. Veterans who are looking for jobs are a great fit to fill this workforce gap in cybersecurity. Moreover, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the median annual salary for cybersecurity workers is $120,000, which is 30 percent more than the U.S. median salary!
- Your skills and training from the military translate well to a cyber career. In the military, you were trained and constantly put into practice the ability to quickly process information for security decisions, maintain situational awareness, learn on the job, and respond to challenging situations. Moreover, many of you also received a security clearance, which often will help expediate the hiring process for federal positions in the cybersecurity field.

Cybersecurity is a field that involves protecting our nation’s people, businesses, government agencies, organizations, and information from critical threats that impact our national security and well-being.
