This course covers database concepts, logical models, and internal data models (network, hierarchical, relational). It also covers the use of database management systems, database administration and SQL.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Database terminology.
  2. Understand the difference between traditional file systems and database systems.
  3. Know the advantages and disadvantages of file systems and database systems.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of database systems types and the DBMS functions.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the database system environment.
  6. Understanding why database design is important.
  7. Understand the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the main database models: Hierarchical, Network, Relational, Entity-Relationship and Object-Oriented.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of the E-R Model details (characteristics, design, and normalization).
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of Relational Model details (characteristics, design, normalization, data structure and implementation).
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of the steps in the database development process.
  11. Demonstrate an understanding of how basic and intermediate-level database queries are expressed using the Structured Query Language (SQL).
  12. Demonstrated an understanding of how tables are created with SQL*PLUS.
  13. Apply Security principles to design and development of database systems and database structures.
  14. Describe common security models of database management systems.
  15. Identify and describe common security concerns in database management systems.
