Unix and System Administration

Programming on a UNIX-based computer system. How to use standard UNIX utilities such as ssh, scp, vi, awk, grep, sed, emacs, as well as script writing in Perl. How to use X Windows and UNIX GUI tools. UNIX programming environment with an overview of the UNIX process model. Basic UNIX administration including system tool and configuration files.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to: 1) Develop an understanding of the LINUX operating system including the use of the shell, the file system model, access control model, process model, and networking features. 2) Demonstrate proficiency using basic LINUX command line utilities including those designed to work with files, the file system, permissions, processes, and networking. 3) Describe the administration of human-computer systems including user, host, and hardware management and the relationship between a single host and the enterprise. 4) Demonstrate proficiency in the automation of system administration tasks using scripting languages including using the shell, specifically bash scripting, and Perl.
