Learning Objectives

1) Understand the architecture of a computer system including its primary components and the role of performance in designing a computer system to perform its four basic tasks. 2) Examine the CPU focusing on the structure and function of its four primary components. 3) Analyze memory hierarchy design and its impact on process and computer performance. 4) Understand the basic interconnection systems of a computer including /O subsystems. 5) Demonstrate mastery in digital number systems and digital design including representing numbers digitally, computer-based arithmetic, and logical circuit design and operation. 6) Understand a machine's instruction set architecture (ISA) including basic instruction fetch and execute cycles, instruction formats, control flow, and operand addressing modes.
