Network Security

Upon completion of this course one should be able to:

• Classify and explain the Network Security Process for various network types as evidenced by satisfactory grades for corresponding laboratory assignments and quizzes.
• Develop predictive measures to assess and prevent network intrusion from outside threats. The student will provide evidence of acquisition of this skill using laboratory exercises, out of class exercises and exam questions.
• Gain an in-depth understanding of the operation of firewalls and VPNs and the ability to successfully configure each as part of a network security plan implementation. The student will provide evidence of acquisition of this skill using laboratory exercises, out of class homework exercises and exam questions.
• Assess implications of privacy, security, and ethical issues as they pertain to an organization's IT Infrastructure. The student will provide evidence of acquisition of this skill using in- and out-of class exercises and exam questions.
• Diagnose possible hacks and propose policies to outline what to do when an intrusion occurs. Student will demonstrate mastery of this outcome by examining virtual machines and then developing and implementing policies that will be tested against simulated attacks.
• Evaluate physical solutions for preventing intrusion. The student will provide evidence of acquisition of this skill using in and out of class exercises and exam questions.
• Implement and deploy firewalls while managing firewall security. Students will demonstrate this skill through lab exercises and exam questions on multiple virtual machines configured to provide a variety of networking environments.
• Secure local and Internet communications with a VPN. The student will provide evidence of acquisition of this skill using laboratory exercises, out of class research exercises and exam questions.
