Linux Fundamentals

Students completing this course should be able to:
Understand the origins, key features, and common uses of Linux, identify the characteristics of various Linux distributions and install a popular distribution of Linux. Work with the Linux shell, command line, and text editors, and locate and use help resources and documentation. Explain the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard, search for, manage and work with directories and files. Understand and modify file and directory ownership and permissions. Identify common boot loaders and their operations, and manage and understand filesystem and storage device types in Linux. Manage and understand command inputs and outputs, variables and shell scripts. Explain and configure common GUI environments and their components including X Windows, and use the Linux Desktop. Understand how to start, stop and restart daemons, how the init daemon works, and the purpose and operations of run levels and targets
