Introduction to Network Concepts

Provides instruction in networking media, physical and logical topologies, common networking standards and popular networking protocols.  Course content emphasizes the TCP/IP protocol suite and related IP addressing schemes, including CIDR.  Course content also includes selected topics in network implementation, support and LAN/WAN connectivity.

Learning Objectives

  1. Distinguish between client-server and peer-to-peer networks
  2. Identify types of applications and protocols used in networks
  3. Describe the functions of core TCP/IP protocols, identify how each protocol's information is formatted in a TCP/IP message, and explain how routers manage internetwork communications
  4. Identify various network security risks
  5. Describe tools used to evaluate a network's security and discuss physical security methods that prevent and detect intrusions
  6. Configure devices on a network for increased security and describe how various security policies guide users' activities on a network
  7. Describe the functions of various network security devices, implement security precautions on a switch, and track processes of authentication, authorization, and auditing on a network
