Research and Data Analysis in Information Technology

This course provides students with an understanding of methods and tools used by information professionals for research and data analysis. It focuses on both quantitative and qualitative methods in information technology professions including surveys, interviews, need assessments, requirements analysis, and transaction log analysis. It provides students with the opportunity to conceptualize an IT problem, develop a research plan, and design methods for assessing, collecting, analyzing, and reporting research data. Research, in the context of IT professions, deals with the ability to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information if necessary, and identify key issues that need to be addressed. Analytical thinking is a critical skill required for identifying appropriate solutions for streamlining complex work processes and improving communications in organizations.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define basic research concepts, principles and methods.
  2. Explain the importance of research in designing, implementing, and managing socio-technical systems effectively.
  3. Discuss methods for evaluating the needs, goals and information behaviors of different users of socio-technical systems (e.g. individual users, social groups, organizations, etc.).
  4. Apply appropriate methods to explore a variety of socio-technical issues or problems.
  5. Develop reliable data collection instruments and procedures.
  6. Discuss issues related to the ethical collection and use of research data.
  7. Analyze and interpret different types of quantitative and qualitative research data.
  8. Create professional reports and visualizations that effectively communicate research findings to different stakeholders.
  9. Design and complete a team---based research project to critically explore an information, communication, and technology---based issue or problem.
