Information Technologies

This course provides a solid foundation in the fundamental concepts, theories and principles in information technology and discusses critical issues surrounding their use and how they impact everyday life. An understanding of the concepts and principles underlying the design and use of digital devices, computer hardware, software, telecommunications, networking and multimedia is an integral part of any IT curriculum.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define and explain common IT concepts and terms.
  2. Discuss the history and purpose of telecommunication and computer protocols, standards, and tools.
  3. Discuss how technologies are shaped by social, economic, cultural, and political environments and contexts.
  4. Explain theories of digital computing and its application in human communication.
  5. Describe main technologies of the Internet, the Web and related services.
  6. Examine how IT is applied in different types of organizations (for profit/non-‐ profit; government at different levels; education; small/big business; etc.).
  7. Evaluate the use and usefulness of these technologies.
  8. Discuss different ethical issues related to IT use (e.g., copyright, intellectual property, issues related to privacy and security, issues related to data mining, filtering online content, etc.).
