Cryptography and Information Security

Classical cryptology, entropy. Stream and block ciphers. Public-key versus symmetric cryptography, one-way and trap-door functions. Primality and factorization, DLP, Diffie-Hellman, RSA and ElGamal cryptosystems. Issues of computer and network security. Secure protocols, identification, authentication, digital signatures, secret sharing schemes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the security of fundamental cryptographic primitives and systems.
  2. Analyze security of symmetric and public key schemes, hash functions, message authentication codes and cryptographic protocols.
  3. Define and apply generic cryptanalysis methods including brute force, frequency analysis, meet-in-the-middle.
  4. Examine symmetric key encryption functions: Classical ciphers, stream ciphers, block ciphers.
  5. Identify applications and real-life deployment of cryptographic constructions.
  6. Develop software skills for implementing cryptographic algorithms and for analyzing their security.
  7. State basic probabilistic and statistical notions and apply this knowledge in cryptanalysis.
