Website Design

This course teaches proper website design techniques to students from all degree programs. Topics include visual design and graphics, information architecture, usability and accessibility, communication, adaptation to audience, markup languages, and development tools and processes. Coursework is focused on applying website design principles and techniques to projects in the students’ disciplines. The course is gauged for beginners who are computer competent; it does not teach computer programming.

Learning Objectives

  1. Create a visually appealing website using styles, colors, and themes that provide a unique look and feel that is appropriate to the site content.
  2. Produce website designs that accommodate a wide variety of display sizes, including those used on mobile devices.
  3. Apply a visual design to a website in a manner that is consistent across the site utilizing technologies that allow for rapid development and easy maintenance,
  4. Develop custom graphics for a website utilizing free online graphics and photo editing tools.
  5. Organize website content on a web server in a manner that is logical and easy to maintain.
  6. Provide website content to the user through a browser in a manner that is fast and easy to access and navigate for all types of users.
  7. Organize web content in pages in a manner that communicates information effectively and efficiently.
  8. Demonstrate how to use popular web design and development tools and content management systems, integrate multiple forms of media in a website effectively, and use valuable commercial services such as web hosting, domain registrars, web analytics, and search engine optimization.
