Course Description

Information plays an important role in the lives of individuals around the world. Access to information is an important factor in the economic, social, cultural and political development of all nations. This course focuses on analysis of information management and access at the national or country level in the context of international globalization. Students will develop the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to analyze and compare the social, cultural, economic and political factors that affect access to information and information service provision.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with the literature from international organizations on the role of information in economic development and globalization.
  2. Identify the cultural, political and economic factors that impact the development of the information infrastructure and capacity of individual nations.
  3. Identify information access, management, and service provision principles, practices, and policies of three nations at different levels of economic development.
  4. Compare the development of information infrastructure and capacity for three nations at different levels of economic develop.
  5. Explain how information infrastructure and capacity influences and is influenced by information access, management and service provision principles, practices, and policies in three nations at different levels of economic development.
