Course Description

This is the annual refresher discussion of HIPAA, HITECH & Omnibus, developments in the current year, and the outlook for next year. Individuals with certifications of CHPE, CHSE and CHPSE need to take this course to maintain their credentials. This course is released in Q1 of every year for activities related to the current year.

    • Gain comprehensive knowledge of HIPAA’s key components, including the Privacy Rule, Security Rule, and Breach Notification Rule.
    • Understand the legal and ethical obligations for protecting patient information.
  2. Patient Privacy and Confidentiality:
    • Learn the principles of patient privacy and the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
    • Identify what constitutes protected health information (PHI) and the guidelines for its use and disclosure.
  3. Security Measures:
    • Understand the requirements for securing electronic PHI (ePHI) to prevent unauthorized access.
    • Learn about administrative, physical, and technical safeguards required to ensure data security.
  4. Breach Identification and Response:
    • Develop the skills to identify potential breaches and understand the protocols for reporting and responding to data breaches.

    • Educate on patients' rights under HIPAA, including the right to access their medical records and request amendments.

    • Understand the role of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in enforcing HIPAA regulations and conducting audits.
