Course Description

Application design and development are much needed skills in current professional job markets. Procedural programming, as well as object-‐ oriented programming (OOP), are widely accepted and used methodologies for designing modern systems. This course will provide the foundational aspects of application design using procedural and OOP programming concepts and techniques, employing various application development tools.

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop internet applications using core client-‐ and server-‐ side scripting skills;
  2. Use proprietary and nonproprietary integrated development environments (IDEs);
  3. Create web form applications;
  4. Create MVC applications;
  5. Develop user interfaces using master pages, site navigation and themes;
  6. Employ user interfaces to read from and write to databases;
  7. Develop rich internet applications using industry standards, such as AJAX;
  8. Design web applications that call web services;
  9. Explain the purpose of server controls, and use them when building web forms;
  10. Implement techniques related to the planning, production, and management of medium to large World Wide Web sites, including information organization and design, hardware and software, and cutting-‐ edge development tools;
  11. Design, implement, test, and debug a program to solve a given problem;
  12. Utilize algorithms studied to perform common tasks, such as finding the max and min of a data set, counting, summing, tracking a previous value, searching and sorting, reading until EOF, etc.;
  13. Consider, compare, and evaluate code segments or simple algorithms for relative efficiency in a basic fashion;
  14. Design and employ databases to build professional quality, data-‐ driven applications, using proprietary and open source technologies.
