Course Description

Provides an overview of fundamental concepts of databases and database management. These concepts include aspects of database design, database management systems, data models, normalization, the standard relational database query, SQL, basic database security and relational database alternatives.

Learning Objectives

Identify database concepts and their uses. Compare data types and types of databases. Describe a database management system (DBMS) and the services a DBMS provides for users. Demonstrate an understanding of various database design models. Describe the normalization process and define normal forms. Define and be able to use data definition language, data manipulation language, and database triggers as they apply to SQL and for a specified application. Compare relational database alternatives. Demonstrate an understanding of the database administration function. Understand the basics of data integrity and database security.
